Here are some danger if a woman have sexual intercourse during menstruation, described by Laura Berman, PhD, a sex expert and therapist from the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago.
  • A woman is more at risk of transmission of sexually transmitted diseases during menstruation than normal days. This is because during menstruation, the cervix opens so that menstrual blood can come out. The opening of these pathways will allow bacteria to enter and spread to the pelvic cavity.
  • Women are also more likely to have HIV and hepatitis through sexual contact from their partner during the menstrual period.
  • Bacterial infections can also occur during menstruation, because the pH (acidity) of the vagina changes compared to the days before or after menstruation.
